Shame on You Brownback, Roberts

I do not know why I still hold out the hope that the Republican Party can do more than act like 2nd graders. In a stunning display of horribleness 30 Republican Senators voted that it was perfectly fine for government contractors to continue practices in which their employees actually sign away the right to pursue legal action against the company if they are raped by their coworkers. Yup, RAPED by their coworkers. Joining the ranks of complete douchbags are Kansas’ own Sen. Brownback and Sen. Roberts.

I have written both Senators and demanded an explanation on their vote to try and understand why the gang-rape of a government contracted employee is A-Ok. I don’t expect a real answer from them but it would be my hope that the constituents of all 30 Republicans that just couldn’t stand to support a measure proposed by a Democratic Senator hold them accountable for their abhorrent behavior.

The following list are those Senators who support companies like Haliburton and their policies that deny rape victims their day in court.

Alexander (R-TN)
Barrasso (R-WY)
Bond (R-MO)
Brownback (R-KS)
Bunning (R-KY)
Burr (R-NC)
Chambliss (R-GA)

Cochran (R-MS)
Corker (R-TN)
Cornyn (R-TX)
Crapo (R-ID)
DeMint (R-SC)
Ensign (R-NV)
Enzi (R-WY)
Graham (R-SC)
Gregg (R-NH)
Inhofe (R-OK)
Isakson (R-GA)
Johanns (R-NE)
Kyl (R-AZ)
McCain (R-AZ)
McConnell (R-KY)
Risch (R-ID)
Roberts (R-KS)
Sessions (R-AL)
Shelby (R-AL)
Thune (R-SD)
Vitter (R-LA)
Wicker (R-MS)

Thank you to the 10 Republicans that crossed the aisle in support of women’s safety and constitutional right to due process. This included Republican Sen. George LeMieux of Florida. He stated,

“I can’t see in any circumstance that a woman who was a victim of sexual assault shouldn’t have her right to go to court. So, that is why I voted for it.”

Interestingly, all of the female Republican Senators voted for the amendment as well.

My Thoughts on the Murder of Dr. Tiller

Dr. George Tiller

Dr. George Tiller

I am going to start this out by making it very clear that this is an editorial, an opinion piece and one that is heavily influenced by the very strong emotions I am experiencing on this day. As I’m sure you all know, Dr. George Tiller was assassinated this morning while performing his usher duties at his church. He was a great man who advocated strongly for women’s reproductive rights and ran one of only three clinics in the United States where a woman could have a late-term abortion.

Of course, the obvious hypocrisy from the christian fundies is on extravagant display as online commentators, blog owners, and others proclaim the “victory” that is the violent death of this man. In Wichita those outspoken “pro-lifers” are driving by the scene of his murder honking their horns and cheering his death.

Randall Terry, the founder of Operation Rescue, with whom the murderer was apparently affiliated stated

“George Tiller was a mass-murderer. We grieve for him that he did not have time to properly prepare his soul to face God. I am more concerned that the Obama Administration will use Tiller’s killing to intimidate pro-lifers into surrendering our most effective rhetoric and actions.”

After that sickening display of victim blaming, I’m left asking myself, exactly what “rhetoric and actions” is Randall afraid Obama will take away? Murder?

It’s time to call this what it is and publicly proclaim that Christian Fundamentalist Terrorism is a problem that has to be addressed. It is not truthful to say that the shooter was alone responsible for his actions when the airwaves, pulpits, and internet are flooded with zealots encouraging the fundies to take up arms and rebel against the government, immorality, and not being white or straight enough. Repugnant assholes like Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’Reilly, Pat Robertson, and Ann Coulter are steadily leading the very gullible very passionate religious right citizens into dangerous territory.

Fear is something I’m keenly feeling as I write this and read the developing stories and the comments on those stories. I’m afraid that a fanatical movement is not very far off, a witch hunt of epic proportions as technology makes distributing the christian fundamentals’ propaganda quick and easy. Who will be the next target?

Palin Defies Conservatives

There has not been really anything that Sarah Palin has done that I supported; however, Governor Palin has just appointed Morgan Christen to the Alaska state Supreme Court. Christen will only be the second woman to hold the position of Supreme Court Justice in Alaska and was not the recommendation by the state conservatives. They were pushing for Palin to nominate Eric Smith, a man who the Alaska Family Council felt would be more likely to not go along with other activist judges.

Personally I am surprised and please with Governor Palin’s choice. The Alaska Family Council is a very conservative group that champions two issues that Palin holds dear, opposition to gay marriage and abortion. Palin said in a statement that she had “every confidence that Judge Christen has the experience, intellect, wisdom and character to be an outstanding Supreme Court justice.”

Kudos to Governor Sarah Palin for makingĀ  a sound decision, may it not be her last.

And She’s Off!

A Connecticut group became the first registered suckers to raise money for Palin’s 2012 presidential run that she has not yet announced. The group, 2012 Draft Sarah Committee, has so far pulled in $3,000 all of which will be spent on a grassroots organizing effort to rally support for Sarah Palin. Once she has her own official campaign they will gladly hand the money over to her.

I wish I could understand how anyone could seriously hope that the woman who doesn’t know basic geography, American history, or her own preferred reading material should be our next president. I’ve attached the Katie Couric interview in case anyone needs a refresher on the idiocy of Sarah Palin.

Video: Palin Confronted by Nicholas Tucker, Native Alaskan

Nicholas Tucker, the Native Alaskan whose letter was published in Alaskan newspapers and called attention to the plight of rural Alaskans, confronted Sarah Palin at her recent photo op food drop in a small Alaskan village. The video is shaky and the background noises are loud but listen as Mr. Tucker pleas for help for the Native Alaskans, speaking about how Alaska has made much from its resources taken from their lands without much benefit to them.

Palin attempts to argue that young villagers should simply go to work in the oil fields and fisheries away from their villages and send money home. She states that her husband left his native “village” and worked on the North Bank for years in order to stay involved in community life. Although Mr. Tucker tries to explain that the native way of life will be lost if their young people leave, it appears to not go over well with Palin. I guess that’s to be expected from the governor who did not meet once with her Rural Affairs advisor.
